The play, inspired by "The Negro Motorist Green Book," a travel guide used by African-Americans when much of the United States was segregated; tells the enthralling story of a holocaust survivor and an African-American salesman, and how their lives intersect in 1950’s America.
The Green Bookis the first of "Backstage at the Lincoln” an exceptional series of live play readings presented in partnership with Theater J and the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, and the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. The series launches Wednesday, September 15, with an opening reception at 6:30 p.m. followed by the performance at 7:45 p.m. and a Q & A with the playwright Calvin Ramsey and Mr. Bond.
"Backstage at the Lincoln," highlights plays dealing with contemporary and historic issues in America’s “melting pot” of culture and identity. Each production offers audiences a chance to hear new or rarely produced plays inspired by history that connect with today's social and political issues.
