Forget five major food groups—we recently learned how many more truly exist at the 2011 Summer Fancy Food Show. Showcasing 180,000 foods and beverages from 2,400 exhibitors, the annual event (usually held in NYC) made its first DC appearance. Although not open to the public, the show gave us a chance to check out the multitude of new and exciting food products that will be coming soon to a store near you.

The funk band Parliament may have dubbed DC the Chocolate City in the 1970s, but DC Metro Chocolate Tours is giving the city’s nickname a whole new meaning! Led by a guide who knows all things chocolate, the tour offers a unique way to entertain out-of-towners or a group of fellow chocoholics. We recently checked out its Dupont Circle chocolate walking tour, which took us to several of our favorite chocolate-centric spots.*

Ahoy There Jak-e! Newcomer Jake’s American Grille, in the Chevy Chase area of upper Northwest DC, is a tribute to owner Gaynor Jablonski’s late grandfather, Edwin “Jake” Jablonski. Jake served as a Navy sailor (retiring as a chief petty officer) and as a research and test engineer at the Naval Research Laboratory. He invented and patented a foam that was used to fight fires on Navy carrier flight decks for almost four decades.

The Chinese Lunar New Year is here, giving us a reason to get out and shake off those mid-winter blues. At Ping Pong Dim Sum, nestled in the heart of the Penn Quarter, you can celebrate by sampling dishes that give a modern twist to traditional dim sum.

‘Tis the season to be jolly…and to entertain visiting family. Sure, you know which bars have extended happy hours, but you may come up short when it comes to good clean family fun. Luckily, National Harbor has something for everyone this holiday season.

Make no mistake, Carmine’s is big—from its 20,000 square feet of interior space and nine private dining rooms to the billboard size menu boards that grace every room. Nostalgic black-and-white family photos and mismatched chandeliers give the space a classic Italian joint vibe. Sinatra tunes waft over the din of the boisterous crowd.
