The garmentDistrict pop-up gallery and boutique kicked off last month with the “Light it Up” opening reception and after party at Lux Lounge. Created by Shaw Main Streets, Inc. and SiNGA Inc., the month-long “temporary retail and art installation” highlights local talent and features the works of artists, photographers, musicians, and designers.
One stand out talent of the garmentDistrict is fashion and accessories designer, Lara Akinsaya, creator of L~Shandi designs. Lara’s inspirations for her designs come from her Nigerian background where traditional dress includes beautifully vibrant colors, elaborate cuts, and patterns. She aspires to blend these traditional African designs with Western cuts to provide unique but functional dresses (all machine washable!), purses, and accessories. Upcoming garmentDistrict events include live music, sewing classes, and a L~Shandi Designs Trunk Show on March 19.
